NLIU Bhopal hosted the 1st G.P. Singh Memorial Lecture on Whether Indian Judiciary is Shackled by Precedents? by Hon’ble Justice R.V. Raveendran (Former Judge, Supreme Court of India) on 22nd November, 2014. The attendees included Hon’ble Justice Ajit Singh (Senior Judge) and other distinguished members of the MP Judiciary. Justice Raveendran in his lecture while highlighting shear number of reported judgments, judges and their vanity as the factors that lower the effective edifice of precedents, advised self regulation in judgment reporting and clear, precise guidelines to be issued to law journals, in order to effectuate precedents as a source of law and the backbone of common law system followed in India. The lecture was in the memory of Justice G.P. Singh (Former Chief Justice of M.P. High Court) whose academic excellence through his books on statutory interpretation, law of tort and administrative law was remembered by all luminaries, who urged students to learn and re-learn from his books.
